Michael McCarthy has been appointed as Chairperson of Sophia.
The former TD for Cork South-West succeeds Denis Doherty, who is retiring from the Board. Sophia would like to acknowledged the major contribution of the outgoing the Chairperson who has steered Sophia through two terms as Chair and a significant expansion of the organisation's response to homelessness.
Michael McCarthy is a former TD and Senator and has served as Chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing. Mr McCarthy assumes office at a critical time for housing policy in Ireland.
On his election he said:
“Sophia looks forward to working with the Minister, his officials and with statutory agencies at national and regional level in achieving the objectives set out in Housing For All. As an approved housing body with a proud track record of collaboration and partnership Sophia is well placed to assist in tacking the issue of homelessness in a strategic way”.
Paying tribute to his predecessor Mr McCarthy noted that;
“During Denis Doherty’s tenure as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Sophia, the organisation expanded its response to homelessness, increasing the number of people it supported by 100%. He was a powerful advocate of the founding principles of Sophia, with our emphasis on the provision of homes not just houses. He recognised that moving people out of homelessness is not just about short term solutions or the provision of space but demands a more comprehensive response”.
