Sophia illustrates that Housing and Support can have lasting impact on people’s lives. Minister for Housing open new Sophia Homes

Today, Monday 25th November 2024, Sophia Housing and Homelessness Charity continued its response to housing and homelessness by completing the development of 10 new Homes in Sussex Street Dún Laoghaire.

Commenting at the official opening of these new homes Minister Darragh O’Brien said, “It’s fantastic to mark the official opening of these fabulous new social homes on Sussex Street in Dún Laoghaire. To see what was once a Credit Union building in the heart of a town turned into 10 new, top quality homes is exactly what we want. It is Housing for All in action. I want to highly commend Sophia Housing and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council who have worked in tandem with my Department and the Housing Finance Agency to deliver these homes.”

Michael McCarthy (Chair of Sophia) highlighted that addressing the need for new homes requires a multi agency co-ordinated effort “This Christmas people will have a new home of their own because of the work of Sophia and this was made possible by the positive collaboration between Sophia Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Local Authority, the Department of Housing and the Housing Finance Agency. No agency working alone but a joined up approach delivering for those in need”

Speaking at the event the C.E.O of Sophia Tony O Riordan outlined that Sophia has focused not only on the building of new homes but also the provision of support and this has led to positive outcomes over the last 12 months. Mr O Riordan outlined that Sophia had a 98% housing stability rate in 2023, the reason for this is that Sophia provides good quality homes but also offers compassionate and professional supports so that people are supported to recover from the impact of homelessness and remain out of homelessness.”

The Sophia new development is Sussex Street Dún Laoghaire consists of 10 new homes.
