Sophia’s new project developments

Portlaoise Project

On Monday the 24th of February 2020 Sophia was granted planning permission to build 52 homes on lands formerly owned by the Presentation Sisters in Portlaoise.

After many years of hard work by staff in Sophia and through our partnership with the Presentation Sisters and Portlaoise Parish and with the financial backing of the Department of Housing, Sophia has been granted planning permission to build 52 Homes in the centre of Portlaoise town.

The development will consist of 4 houses and 48 apartments in 6 separate blocks contained on a 1.35 hectare site at Church Avenue in Portlaoise. The project will include the conservation and redevelopment of the former Presentation Convent building which is a protected structure and the Former Sacred Heart school buildings which date back to the 1860s.

Councillor Thomasina Connell, who is Chair of Laois County Council’s Housing Strategic Policy Committee hailed Sophia’s development as an important aspect of the regeneration of the town centre. The CEO of the local authority, John Mullholland said that the scale and scope of the development created a real sense of urban renewal in Portlaoise..

Over the next 5 years Sophia plans to build over 200 homes across the country, getting planning permission for this major new development is a huge step towards meeting that target and helping to support the most vulnerable in our society.

New Developments in the Pipeline

Sophia is entering an exciting phase of development, with new opportunities and collaboration on the horizon to ensure that homeless individuals, couples and families across Ireland continue to receive the support they need as they recover from the trauma of being homeless.
