Sophia Granted over €10 Million to build 47 Homes on Former Presentation Convent Site in Portlaoise Town Centre

Sophia's ongoing commitment to support families, couples and individuals as they emerge from the traumatic experience of homelessness has taken a step forward in the Midlands with the announcement that €10,059,191 will be invested in their proposed housing development in Portlaoise, potentially creating homes for over 150 people.

The historic Presentation Sisters Convent Building which, generations of townspeople have been educated in and is an iconic landmark in the town centre will be retained as part of the development. Not only creating new homes and support for people who so dearly need it but also being part of the revitalising of the heart of the Midlands fastest growing urban centre.

Sophia has been collaborating with the Presentation Sisters on the development of the former Convent Site to ensure that their legacy would be a continuation of providing support to those in greatest need.

The development of the Presentation Sisters site is in line with Laois County Council’s regeneration plans to bring new life and vitality to the centre of Portlaoise over the next 20 years. It is an exciting time for Sophia as we meet the ever-growing need to provide homes and support people to recover from the trauma of homelessness and begin in lives in a home for life not just a bed for the night.

Since its foundation 20 years ago Sophia has been committed to a ‘Housing First’ approach to solving homelessness in Ireland, providing homes and support to those emerging from the trauma of homelessness. Sophia owns and manages a range of homes in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Sligo and now works with over 600 families, couples and individuals at any one time.
