Best Will in the World Week 20th - 24th October 2014

Say #IWill for Sophia: Consider leaving an ever-lasting gift to Sophia in your will. Best Will in the World Week takes place from Monday, 20th October until Friday, 24th October, and Sophia Housing is asking that anyone thinking about gifting from their will to charity, to consider leaving a bequest to Sophia.

During this week, participating solicitors from across Ireland will offer initial will consultations for a flat fee of just €50 to people who are considering making a will or would like to amend an existing will. Organised by MyLegacy, which is an umbrella group of over 70 of Ireland’s favourite charities, including Sophia Housing, the campaign encourages people to avail of expert, impartial and independent advice on the importance of making a will, while also asking people to consider leaving a gift to charity. There are almost 500 solicitors already signed up to participate.

Sophia works with marginalised children, families and individuals who, for any number of reasons, find themselves out of their own home, and work with them to help them acquire the skills to deal with everyday issues that may have caused them to be homeless in the first place. It strives to offer a holistic, person-centred model of care. This involves working with people at their own pace, using key-working and care planning to support them in their journey towards greater independence for themselves. Established in 1999, Sophia has projects in Dublin, Wicklow, Limerick, Cork and Sligo, and requires much needed funds to continue to support vulnerable families.

According to Declan Dunne, CEO, Sophia Housing, “MyLegacy is a wonderful initiative and we at Sophia Housing are delighted to be involved. Recent research conducted by MyLegacy shows that one in three people would leave a gift to a children’s charity and 11% would consider a homeless charity. I would encourage anyone making a will to consider leaving a gift to Sophia after family and friends have been looked after, so that we can continue to support the vulnerable children and their families availing of our services and accommodation.”

Making a will is easier, cheaper and more straightforward than people often think, while not having a will can cause problems, both legal and personal, that could be easily avoided. Best Will in the World Week gives people the chance to access effective and practical advice on making a will for a nominal fee, which could save on financial issues for loved ones later on.
