Tax Relief

How does it work?

If you are in the PAYE tax net, the tax benefit goes to the charity, not the taxpayer. For example, if you are a top rate taxpayer, a €500 donation is worth €862 to the charity (€500 donation + €362 tax). After the donation of €500 the charity can reclaim the €362 tax you paid on the money.

If you are not in the PAYE system

If you pay tax through self assessment, you are allowed to write off the cost of charitable donations against your tax bill. So a €500 donation to charity will cost you €290 net of tax.

Conditions of the scheme

To participate in the scheme, the charity must be approved by the Revenue Commissioners and the donation must be for at least €250. There is no maximum limit on the donations made but they must be unconditional and the donor must not receive any benefit in return.

More information on the scheme is available from www.revenue.ie
